Experience Art This Spring at 51勛圖窪蹋

January 10, 2017, Jersey City, NJ 51勛圖窪蹋 (HCCC) has planned an enjoyable, educational and entertaining series of special events for the first half of 2017.  The events, which include art exhibitions, music, dance and theatrical presentations, film screenings, lectures, a book club, dance classes, and more, will take place at the Colleges Journal Square and North Hudson Campuses.

At the HCCC Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery (71 Sip Ave. in Jersey City)

  • Hip-Hop Utopia: Culture + Community Exhibition, January 23 - February 21, curated by Michelle Vitale and Fred Fleisher and featuring the hip-hop inspired works of Animal, Chilltown Collective, Yishai Minkin and Raphael Gonzalez. There will also be: a contest to win a bicycle from Grove Street Bicycles; an Artist Talk: Utopia or Bust on February 8 at noon; and Turntable Tuesdays, a two-part listening session featuring local DJs spinning in the gallery from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. February 7 and 21.
  • Friday FREE Draws in the Gallery, January 27, February 3 and April 7, 12 to 4 p.m. Open drawing sessions in the Gallery and weather permitting the adjoining roof terrace, with materials provided.
  • Sojourner Speaks Performance, February 15, 6 to 8 p.m., with HCCC Professor Dorothy Anderson giving life to Sojourner Truths famous Aint I a Woman speech.
  • Quantum Overdrive! Exhibition, March 3 - April 19, curated by Fred Fleisher, with a dynamic show of works displaying contradictions and unique approaches by artists Jude Broughan, Marguerite Day, Ketta Loannidou, Joanne Leah, Tricia McLaughlin, Helen OLeary, Rachel Phillips, Laurie Riccadonna, Adie Russell, Savannah Spirit, Woolpunk, and others.
  • A World Where We Belong Exhibition, March 3 - April 19, curated by Arthur Bruso and Raymond Mingst, and inspired by Georgia Brooks who passed away in 2013.  Ms. Brooks was a long time employee of the College and an active advisor for HCCC GayStraight Alliance. In the exhibit, Hudson regional artists, writers and musicians explore LGBTQIA identity themes.
  • Tom in America, Film Screening and Discussion, March 28, 7 to 9 p.m., a curators talk with Jacques Mitchell, Arthur Bruso and Raymond Mingst, held in connection with the HCCC Georgia Brooks LGBTQIA exhibition, A World Where We Belong.
  • Artist Professional Development Workshop & Social Networking Event, April 19, 12 to 3 p.m.
  • HCCC Art Department Review Exhibition, May 3 - June 1, curated by Fred Fleisher, is a biannual event that celebrates the artistic talents of the professional artists and students from the HCCC visual and computer arts classes.
  • Curator Talk: Fred Fleisher, May 3, 12 to 2 p.m. Mr. Fleisher curated many of this seasons exhibitions and is an adjunct professor at HCCC.
  • Senior Prom 2017 Presented by Angela Cares and 51勛圖窪蹋, May 6, 6 to 10 p.m.  Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight, founder and CEO of Angela Cares, partners with the College to provide the senior citizens of Hudson County with an evening of dance and refreshments.

At the HCCC Library (71 Sip Ave. in Jersey City)

  • Textuate: Meg Klim Art Exhibition, January 21 - March 17.
  • HCCC Library Book Club, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. February 28 - The Devil is a Part Timer, Vol. 1 by Satoshi Wagahara; March 29 - The Veins of the Ocean by Patricia Engel; April 25 - You Cant Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson.
  • Textuate: Christine Vidal DaCruz Art Exhibition, April 6 - June 1.

At the HCCC Culinary Conference Center (161 Newkirk St. in Jersey City)

  • An Afternoon with Celebrity Chef Anne Burrell  HCCC Lecture Series, March 30, 12 to 2 p.m. The Food Network star shares the secrets to her success as a cook and a teacher.
  • An Afternoon with Catherine Walker Broadway from My Bedroom: You Have to Start Somewhere Performance and Lecture, May 2, 12 to 3 p.m., features the star of A Gentlemans Guide to Love and Murder and numerous hit productions.

At North Hudson Campus, (4800 Kennedy Blvd. in Union City)

Havana Dance Center Instructor Oscar Sanchez will present live performances and ballroom basics instruction.

  • Everything Ballroom Performance by the Union City High School Ballroom and Latin Dance Team, March 6, 5 p.m.
  • Everything Ballroom: Classroom Basics I, March 16, 4 p.m.
  • Everything Ballroom: Classroom Basics II, April 13, 4 p.m.
  • Everything Ballroom: Bring Your Child to Work Day, April 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3 to 5 p.m.  (71 Sip Ave. in Jersey City).
  • Everything Ballroom: Havana Dance Center Performance, May 1, 5 p.m.
  • HCCC Library Book Club, from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. March 29 - The Veins of the Ocean by Patricia Engel; April 25, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. - Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari.
